Gales push across NZ as Wilma passes the Chatham Islands

Gale force winds continue to blow across New Zealand this evening between a large high moving in from the west and departing ex-tropical cyclone Wilma to the east.

Wilma is now joining forces with another low east of the lower South Island, helping push a very strong south westerly flow across both main islands.

Ex-tropical cyclone Wilma is now well clear of the North Island as she quickly heads out into the Pacific Ocean towards the Chatham Islands.

Wilma will now start a rapid deepening process that will help push a strong south westerly across the entire country and churn up large seas along the east coast.

The worst of the rain has cleared Northland, Auckland and Coromandel Peninsula, although strong winds are expected to follow.

Ex-tropical cyclone Wilma now lies north of East Cape and is rapidly moving away from New Zealand reports

The destructive cyclone, which maintained category 2 status overnight, will be centred east of New Zealand in the next couple of hours.

Two missing as house falls in storm

Two people are missing after a house collapsed at Onetangi, on Waiheke Island, as tropical cyclone Wilma battered the upper North Island overnight.

The house collapsed after being hit by a large slip and is one of more than 200 incidents keeping emergency services in the region busy.

Wilma tracks south towards BOP / East Cape

Wilma continues to race south eastwards towards East Cape with torrential rain and severe gales this morning.

In the past hour gusts of 125km/h have been recorded in the Hauraki Gulf but winds are rapidly easing with the storm now pushing into eastern Coromandel and Bay of Plenty and towards East Cape.
