For over a decade WeatherWatch.co.nz has loved to receive your comments and questions here, however we need to tighten up on our rules of reply so that we can spend more time focusing on forecasting.
Before you ask a question please ensure you have read our latest news stories, weather video and specially made infographics on our homepage, as we will no longer be answering questions that are already generally answered there, or answered already in our hourly or 10 day forecasts at both WeatherWatch.co.nz or RuralWeather.co.nz

I live on the hauraki plains and refer to your rural weather website but I find the rainfall totals to be wildly in accurate. I have never been a fan of met service but they are more realistic in there totals and even met Vue forcasting you can tell a week out that there forecast totals are more than double yours why could this be so, cheers for your response

Hi Stu, thanks for your feedback. Appreciate you’re in drought and so rain is crucial right now, and most rain bands for the past few years have been falling apart over Waikato and the Hauraki Plains, which makes every rainfall total so much more critical. We use the same data as MetVue, so they can’t be more accurate than us. Our data has been rated as the most accurate by both NZ Govt Agency and an independent international body. Most accurate doesn’t mean always perfect. If rain is critical to you, make sure you read our daily stories and weekday videos to help make sense of all the factors that go into a rainfall forecast. Feel free to use us with other forecasters too. WeatherWatch and RuralWeather provide a lot of extra context on top of “just a forecast” to help you work out the most likely chances of rain.

I’ve been a long time supporter of WW in Northeast Waikato. But since you teamed up with Metservice I have found that you have been over- forecasting rain that has not arrived during the summer / autumn period. I found your forecasts more accurate before you joined Metservice.

H Ian, we haven’t teamed up with MetService, we simply display the public rain radar. Our data has been independently rated as most accurate rainfall forecaster in NZ by both the NZ Government and by an international firm that measured IBM. No forecaster is perfect but we’re pleased to be leading the way as most accurate in NZ, even if not perfect (yet!).

Any guesses on what the winter will be like in Queenstown snow-wise?
on 4/05/2022 11:02pm
Hi Alexa, thanks for the question. At this stage we don’t have a strong forecast for this but there are signs that it may be a later start this year. Too mild at the moment (and dry) – but actually sometimes a milder winter can create more snow in southern areas. The month of May doesn’t look too snowy around Queenstown, but there is a temp drop coming next week which bring a dusting on the mountains.
