As of 2024 we will no longer be publishing questions related to weather forecasts if they are answered via our hyper-local hourly & 10 day forecasts, weather maps and regular daily and monthly weather & climate videos.

We’re a small NZ business with limited resources to respond to general weather questions. Our social media pages may be helpful to you, especially if you want to often talk (or groan!) about your local weather. You can find more resources from us here if that’s your thing.

Over the past few months, has the inner AKL region experienced more severe weather, specifically thunderstorms, than in comparable months in previous years? Judging by the number of severe thunderstorm warnings issued by Metservice and the number of alerts via my mobile it would seem so? Or are they just playing it safe ito of predictions? You guys are definitely the go-to for weather info. Thank you!

WW Forecast Team on 9/05/2025 8:14pm

Hi Helen, yes there has been an uptick in severe weather/thunderstorms/downpours in Auckland lately (and Northland and other parts of northern NZ in particular). That has been due to a series of both low pressure areas around the north of NZ, but mainly due to very powerful anticyclones to the east of NZ dragging down sub-tropical air. This set-up often causes this weather but we don’t always get this set-up every year, hence why it’s noticeable now. Autumn, Winter and Spring can all produce a lot of thundery weather when more tropical air is mixed into the NZ area. Thanks for the support of what we do 🙂

Can you please tell these thunderstorms to come down to Hamilton.
Thanks

Sean on 7/05/2025 9:09pm

Interesting Wellington is forecast for 30mm of rain tomorrow, yet the latest MetService forecast shows much less than that (closer to 10). No rain warning which i’d expect for 30mm

Blake on 5/05/2025 9:23pm

Hi;

Just wondering… my area (Bankside) is showing a 0% chance of rain but with 8.2ml being forecast. Later this week on Thursday. How should I interpret that? It seems a contradiction?
Cheers,

WW Forecast Team on 5/05/2025 10:28pm

Hi Blake, if you match/check that with the hourly rainfall graphs it will makem more sense. Usually when that happens it means a dry day, but rain overnight. Rain is expected late at night/overninght Thursday going into Friday. The one single percentage we show for the entire day is during daylight hours up to 7pm.

Cheers,
– WW

Hi WW;

Thanks for getting back to me. That makes sense. The WW day is basically 7am – 7pm?

WW Forecast Team on 5/05/2025 11:26pm

Yes it is 🙂 (we should really have that written on the site)
