Hi, Marty here. 1st time botherer, long time observer. I’m planning a trip from west Auckland to the north shore this afternoon. First of all I would like to know if the wind is going to tip my truck over on the harbour bridge and damage another structural support, and secondly can I book in a dry spell between 3-6pm as I’m made of foam and don’t want to get waterlogged while working outside?
Keep up the good work!

Hi Marty, Thanks for your message! Winds today will be lighter than they’ve been in recent days so you will be fine on the bridge! 🙂 As for rain, there is the risk of a shower today mainly up until about 4pm otherwise looks mainly dry today. 🙂

As someone who lives in the south, the Southern Ocean is the weather system that often affects us most. Do we know what the Southern Ocean is doing at present and into summer? Is SAM going to be a little quieter this year?

Hi Barry. The Southern Annular Mode (SAM) is expected to be positive for the remainder of October, also La Niña tends to favour positive SAM during spring and summer. Take a look here for more info from the team at BoM in Aussie: http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/enso/

Perhaps a chance on Saturday but it may not happen as it’s a very narrow area, Northland to the north and Waikato to the south have a slightly better chance. But fingers crossed!
