As of 2024 we will no longer be publishing questions related to weather forecasts if they are answered via our hyper-local hourly & 10 day forecasts, weather maps and regular daily and monthly weather & climate videos.

We’re a small NZ business with limited resources to respond to general weather questions. Our social media pages may be helpful to you, especially if you want to often talk (or groan!) about your local weather. You can find more resources from us here if that’s your thing.

Hi Phil and team, I wanted to ask if the rain will come this winter? At least here in the central North Island, we’ve had just a few days of rain. They were pretty big, but apart from that, it’s been sunny and cool. I do like sunny summers, but I also like rainy winters. So, will rain be more frequent later on this winter?

WW Forecast Team on 24/05/2024 8:54pm

Hi John, we’re not big fans of long range forecasting beyond a month, it’s notoriously inaccurate for our part of the world (due to the chaotic weather pattern this far south). Our next ClimateWatch monthly outlook is out on Friday afternoon May 31st and we’ll be looking to see if the powerful highs in Australia that are limiting rain here in NZ will finally break up or not. NZ’s dry weather has been mostly due to the stubborn and large highs parked near Tasmania. So hopefully we will see more wet weather coming into NZ this winter but it’s not a clear path towards that shift.

Hi WW team
I don’t know if anyone has posted about this, but as I type this, the Time/Date on your webpage is showing 12:50pm 22 May when this post is written at 6:36AM 23 May.
This issue has been going on now since 18 May. I run Firefox (up-to-date) on a Samsung phone. I’ve run all the tests incl cache, et al purges. Nothing working RE: bringing Time/Date back in sync. All other website are OK.

I hope there is a fix on your end.
Cheers
Kat

hi phill u said in your video that a cold blast is coming will that bring snow to the nelson ranges or to wellington city?

WW Forecast Team on 21/05/2024 5:24am

Just normal late Autumn snowfall on the South Island ranges mainly… perhaps some on the North Island mountains. Just a SW change that looks cold in the lower South Island in particular.

Bazil on 20/05/2024 12:16am

Hi Phil,
How inclement will the forecast be for Wairoa this coming week 20th May? Metserv has it for a bad week for this district.

WW Forecast Team on 20/05/2024 12:29am

Hi Bazil, it looks fairly wet this week in Wairoa with a cold southerly kicking in on Wednesday. Heaviest rain looks to be on Tuesday, then drops (hopefully) to more moderate falls: it Visit RuralWeather.co.nz or download our new app to see rain graphs/trends that better illustrate weather across NZ for all locations and keep up to date with MetService watches and warnings. Our latest weather video also explains the risks (and uncertainty) with the weather over the North Island this week.

Cheers
Phil

I’ve used your app for a number of years (both the current ‘new’ version and the old one). I visited the South Island a few weeks back and have the app set to show weather for my location.
Having returned home (Bayswater, Auckland) every time I open the app it continues to show data for Bluff before switching to Bayswater and frequently shows current info as Observed in Bluff in the ‘Now’ tab. (IBLUFF8) and (INVERCA42) are both showing now even though the rest of the forecast has switched to my home location of Bayswater.
Thought you’d want to know…
