Snow showers heading to Auckland, serious snow for Canterbury

WeatherWatch.co.nz forecasters - who have exclusively been predicting snow flakes in Auckland most of today - say a new band of snow showers is about to descend on the city this evening.

The forecast says there is a "high risk" of a few snow flakes across the city to sea level while snow may settle at 100 or 200 metres.  The new band of showers is expected to start around 8 or


Snowfall traps 100 motorists

Snow falling across the country has trapped about 100 people in their cars north of Wellington and made roads impassable around the capital and Dunedin.

A polar blast sweeping up the country, this afternoon brought snow to the South and lower North Island and conditions are expected to get worse overnight.

Antarctic blast kicks off in deep south

Hail and showers have been reported in Southland with the first of what will be several cold fronts, each colder than the last, currently moving across Otago.
