Stormy conditions continue to build for NI

Gale force winds are now affecting parts of Auckland with northerly gales west of the airport on the Manukau Heads and Awhitu.  Gusts are reaching 80 to 125km/h with strong winds continuing to strengthen across a number of major North Island centres this afternoon.

In Napier winds are now gusting over 90km/h with 70km/h gusts in Gisborne.


Atrocious weather sets in, winds hit 172km/h in Wellington

Rough weather is continuing to build across New Zealand making for atrocious camping conditions in some regions while hurricane force winds are hitting exposed parts of Wellington.

Heavy rain is currently falling around Taranaki, Wairarapa, Wellington, Nelson, Lakes District and Southland with the heaviest falls in Taranaki and Wellington as of 11:30am.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has again been issued for the region - specifically Rangitaiki.

WeatherWatch.co.nz believes hail, severe winds and torrential rain could hit motorists with little warning in the coming hour in the area - affecting State Highway 5.

Exclusive: House destroyed by squall, 80 yo couple inside at time

A violent squall or tornado last night destroyed a house west of Auckland City while the two occupants, both in their 80s, were inside.

WeatherWatch.co.nz reader Dale Small says his grandparents-in-law were in bed at the the time the violent winds hit.

Chaos as big blow moves in

Auckland's emergency services were stretched last night as a vicious storm caused widespread power cuts and toppled trees on to roads.

Wind gusts which peaked at 150km/h at the Manukau Heads felled power lines, cutting electricity in Warkworth, Remuera, Mangere and large parts of West Auckland.

Thousands of households as far north as Dome Valley near Warkworth and as far south as Huntly were without power.

Large trees crashed on to the Waikato Expressway 50km south of Auckland, striking one vehicle and creating traffic chaos.


Falling trees crush car on SH1, power cut, roofs lifted

Reports are coming in from all over Auckland, Waikato and now Bay of Plenty of trees coming down, some roofs being lifted and power being cut.

Vector's website says that at least 25 suburbs in Auckland have some form of power distruption from the gales and thunderstorms that moved over the city around 6:30pm.


Taranaki hit by storm, heading north

Stormy weather has now hit Taranaki.

WeatherWatch.co.nz says the squalls and thunderstorms are moving a little slower than expected but are still moving north and tonight Waikato, Auckland, Northland and Bay of Plenty will start to see rougher weather moving in.
