Widespread rain and storms for Queensland and New South Wales

Moist winds feeding into a broad trough over the southern interior of Queensland have caused widespread rain and storms in the last 24 hours.

Especially heavy showers fell in southern Queensland and northeastern New South Wales due to a large storm band firing up late in the afternoon on Thursday 3rd.

New Cyclone threat for Queensland

Filed in: forecasters are again picking another tropical cyclone, this time for Queensland early next week.

Long range models are picking an area of low pressure to develop this weekend east of Cairns and potentially becoming a Category 1 cyclone, with winds averaging gale force and gusting as high as 100km/h.

Brisbane is known to be hit by the occasional cyclone and severe flooding as we've already seen this summer but twisters are a rare event.

On this day in 1973 a tornado ripped through the suburbs and although the video is fairly grainy, we still get a good idea of this force of nature.

Darwin swamped in Feb

Over a metre of water has swamped Darwin this February, making it the wettest month on record.

Another 63mm in the last 24 hours, ensured the city pasted February 2011 into the record books.

An active monsoon has been partially responsible this month, keeping the rain gauge ticking over, with only four dry days of the month recorded (so far).

Perth has been sweltering in its hottest summer in 33 years and second hottest summer in more than 110 years of records, according to

"It's virtually a certainty with the rest of the month staying well above 20 degrees at night and rising to the mid 30s every day," weatherzone meteorologist Brett Dutschke said.

Australia: Worst of Cyclone Carlos yet to come

Tropical Cyclone Carlos, estimated to be 50km east northeast of Exmouth and 55km west southwest of Onslow, is moving southwest at 13km/h as a Category 2 cyclone this evening NZT.

Carlos currently lies near the coast about half way between Exmouth (population 2000 people) and Onslow (pop 600), and will continue to move in a southwesterly direction towards Exmouth.

Cyclone Atu still severe, Cyclone Carlos hitting Aussie again

As of 7:50am NZT there were two tropical cyclones active over the New Zealand and Australia region.

The biggest, by a long shot, is Severe Tropical Cyclone Atu, currently moving into New Zealand waters. 

It can clearly be seen on our satellite map (to the right of the page) directly north of New Zealand.
