Another tropical low for Queensland

A tropical low developing in the Coral Sea is expected to bring heavy rainfall to northeast Queensland early next week, but the risk of a cyclone is low.

This part of Queensland has already seen plenty of rain this month. In the previous 24 hours until 9am this morning, Ingham received 146mm, 150mm in Halifax and 156mm in Rollingstone.

Tropical north Queensland is being flooded again, barely a week after the most recent flooding and only a month after Cyclone Yasi hit.

The ground is highly saturated between Townsville and Cairns and cannot take much more, so a lot of this rain is breaching river banks and running across the surface.

More heavy rain drenches Queensland

The monsoon trough is currently stretching through the Cairns area to the Gulf Country, causing heavy rainfall over the North Tropical Coast and Tablelands, and Herbert and Lower Burdekin districts.

Southeasterly winds have been feeding moisture into the monsoon trough, causing heavy rainfall in coastal areas from Cairns to Mackay, where reports of more than 50mm were widespread.

Moist winds feeding into a broad trough over the southern interior of Queensland have caused widespread rain and storms in the last 24 hours.

Especially heavy showers fell in southern Queensland and northeastern New South Wales due to a large storm band firing up late in the afternoon on Thursday 3rd.

New Cyclone threat for Queensland

Filed in: forecasters are again picking another tropical cyclone, this time for Queensland early next week.

Long range models are picking an area of low pressure to develop this weekend east of Cairns and potentially becoming a Category 1 cyclone, with winds averaging gale force and gusting as high as 100km/h.

On this day in 1973 a tornado ripped through the suburbs and although the video is fairly grainy, we still get a good idea of this force of nature.
