Parts of SE Australia see wettest Feb in almost 100yrs

Widespread rain has affected the southeast of Australia, bringing the highest February rain since 1919 to some places.

Tropical Cyclone Dianne and the monsoon have indirectly affected the southeast by sending a large amount of moisture into a trough. This trough stretched from WA right through to Victoria.

Update on Tropical Cyclone Carlos

As of this afternoon Tropical Cyclone Carlos was about 15km southeast of Darwin and moving slowly east northeast.

A cyclone warning has been issued for coastal areas from the Daly River Mouth to Goulburn Island, including Darwin, Croker Island and the Tiwi Islands.

Cyclone Carlos forms over Darwin

A tropical storm has today developed into a tropical cyclone just 3kms from the centre of Darwin reports  The cyclone, which is named Carlos, brought floods and destructive winds to the city overnight local time.

The cyclone currently is a category 1 storm but is expected to strengthen to category 2 strength overnight.

Darwin and the surrounds are being flooded by the biggest rain in several years as a monsoon low hovers over the western Top End.

Shoal Bay, just to the north of Darwin, gained 259 millimetres of rain in the 24 hours to 9am Tuesday, their biggest rain in 14 years.
