BLOG: What a gut-wrenching start to 2011

I have a very unscientific way of calculating the number of natural disasters in the world at any given time - my workload.  My role at WeatherWatch.co.nz isn't as straight forward as other weather forecasters - there is a heavy news element to it too.

Severe storms plough through central NSW

Filed in:

Severe storms have been battering central New South Wales this afternoon, bringing frequent lightning and drenching downpours.

These storms are linked to the severe weather that the state saw yesterday, which brought falls as high as 12mm in 10 minutes periods, gusts in excess of 80km/h and even some hail over southern parts of the state.

Downunder disasters cost insurer $4.3b

Munich Re, the European-based Australasian reinsurance market leader, says recent Australian and New Zealand disasters will cost it about $4.3 billion.

But the natural catastrophes will cost the wider insurance industry up to $15.8 billion, the firm estimated, excluding Cyclone Yasi and last month's Christchurch earthquake.

Weather Video: The Japanese tsunami explained

Philip Duncan teams up with NZHerald.co.nz to explain how Japan's devastating tsunami rippled out across the Pacific - plus he shows how many aftershocks have occurred, where they've occurred and the area responsible for all the activity and tsunami.

Animation - Japanese Tsunami spreading across Pacific Ocean

WeatherWatch.co.nz has uploaded this incredible animation from NOAA's Center for Tsunami Research. The Honshu tsunami was generated by a Mw 8.9 earthquake 130 km (80 miles) E of Sendai, Honshu, Japan. All rights to NOAA.

Tropical low to further intensify Queensland rain

A tropical low developing in the Coral Sea is expected to bring heavy rainfall to northeast Queensland early next week, but the risk of a cyclone is low.

This part of Queensland has already seen plenty of rain this month. In the previous 24 hours until 9am this morning, Ingham received 146mm, 150mm in Halifax and 156mm in Rollingstone.

Flooding rain to continue in cyclone-hit Queensland

Heavy rain in a sodden north Queensland is far from over with only temporary easing likely this weekend, according to weatherzone.com.au.

Tropical north Queensland flooding again

Filed in:

Tropical north Queensland is being flooded again, barely a week after the most recent flooding and only a month after Cyclone Yasi hit.

The ground is highly saturated between Townsville and Cairns and cannot take much more, so a lot of this rain is breaching river banks and running across the surface.
