Perth hit by tornado, heavy rain

It was a very wet Friday morning in Perth as 24mm fell to 9am, marking their heaviest fall since August of last year.

As the cold front swept through Perth in the morning, it dropped a torrential 8mm in 10 minutes just as everyone was arriving at work, no doubt catching a lot of people off guard.

It also caused a damaging tornado.

Lightning hits Qantas jet departing Auckland

A Qantas flight from Auckland to Melbourne was turned back after it was hit by lightning.

The Boeing 737, flight QF 26, had 144 passengers on board. The crew did not declare an emergency and the 737 landed safely at Auckland about 2.30pm.

Qantas said damage to the aircraft was not known but it returned to Auckland as a precaution.

This cold front will be unusually intense for Autumn, with very cold air extending from Tasmania up to the tablelands of NSW.
