While Australia often has more extreme weather than New Zealand lately it's not only been the other way around, but Australia has been quickly slipping into winter while northerlies here have helped create record May temperatures.

A cold front surging over eastern Australia mid-week looks set to yield a flurry of Autumn snow.

This cold front will be unusually intense for Autumn, with very cold air extending from Tasmania up to the tablelands of NSW.

While fairly common for Tasmania and the Victorian Alps, snowfall this early in May is quite unusual for the NSW ranges.

Coldest April day in at least a decade for Brisbane

Most areas across southeast Queensland have just felt their coldest April day in at least a decade as a thick blanket of cloud and persistent rainfall capped maximums.

Brisbane only climbed three degrees above their minimum temperature to a top of 21 degrees yesterday. This was their coldest day since October in at least 11 years for April.

Sydneysiders have endured some steady downpours over the last 18 hours, with over 70mm of rain up until late this afternoon which makes it the wettest April day for 10 years in the big city.

Record rain continues for the soaking tropics

A tropical low embedded within an active monsoon trough has been drenching the Kimberley and Top End with record April rainfall.

The Kimberley district has seen the heaviest rain within the past 24 hours as the tropical low lingers off the west coast. Areas around Derby were awash with as much as 150mm.
