Snow is likely to fall in Australia's alps during the second half of next week, a matter of days after the unofficial end of the Australian 2018 snow season.

For the first time in four and a half months, the natural snow depth at Spencers Creek in NSW hit zero centimetres on Wednesday, October 31st.


Australia: Tasmania to thaw from late-season chill

A late-season chill has recently hit Tasmania with frosts but the island state is about to gradually warm up during the next several days and nights.

Temperatures have dropped to as much as 10 degrees below average but by the end of the week should be as much as five degrees above average.

Last month was the driest September on record for Australia as a whole and its driest calendar month since April 1902. Most of the country received less than 20 per cent of its average rainfall during September, with the exception of a few small areas.

Australia's alps received a late-season dusting of snow this week, although it did little to slow the ongoing spring thaw in the mountains.

Showers spreading across eastern Victoria and NSW in the middle of the week combined with a pool of cold air to cause light snow in the alps on Wednesday night.
