Thunderstorms are expected to be widespread Thursday across the South Island's West Coast while western parts of the North Island may also be in for a rumble.

The free and live Lightning Tracker at WeatherWatch.co.nz has detected an increase in thunderstorms in the past couple of hours to the west of New Zealand.


23 severe weather warnings issued

A deep low pressure system forming south of Southland is set to bring heavy rain and severe gales to both islands of the country.

A number of cold fronts will spread up New Zealand bringing rain to both coasts and gales mostly in the east of the North Island.


Metservice: Gales head to central NZ, warnings issued

Gale force winds have today blasted both northern and southern parts of New Zealand and overnight and during Sunday morning MetService predicts them to affect central New Zealand.


Gales at both ends of NZ

Gale force winds are now pounding both ends of New Zealand as a weather bomb departs to the east of the North Island and a winter storm brushes the deep south.

The gales are hammering Invercargill this evening with gusts to 110km/h - strong enough to cause damage to trees, powerlines and roofs.


Far North mops up after storm

The Far North is in clean-up mode today following a wet and windy weekend.  Farmers have fences to fix and some pasture is still under water.

Federated Farmers Far North president Denis Anderson said although there was still water on some fields, the amount of pasture lost to water damage would be minimal.


Storm clearing NZ, roads closed, power still out

Cloud has spread across the east coast of New Zealand from Otago to East Cape as the weekend's storm moves out into the Pacific Ocean and away from New Zealand. 

Winds have eased almost everywhere and will continue to do so today ahead of a frontal system moving in from the Tasman Sea tomorrow night.

Storm likely to cause damage

Gale force winds have arrived in New Zealand as a particularly aggressive and potentially destructive storm quickly develops north west of the country.

As of 10pm Friday winds averaging 65km/h and gusting over 105km/h were blasting Cape Reinga in the Far North.  Rain was falling across northern parts of Northland.


Sub-tropical storm on the way; warnings issued

A sub-tropical low looks set to bring a windy, wet, few days to northern parts of New Zealand arriving in Northland on Saturday and reaching Hawkes Bay early next week.

The low was predicted earlier this week by computer models used by the Weather Watch Centre and in the past 48 hours the models have shown a dramatic deepening and a change to it's path - taking the storm's strongest winds right over northern New Zealand.


Kaitaia tornado causes extensive damage

Up to 15 houses were left with missing roofing iron and tiling, along with broken windows, after what appeared to be a tornado ripped through Kaitaia Saturday afternoon.

The main frontal band is now spreading away from New Zealand from East Cape.
