Another major downpour for Lake Wakatipu

More torrential rain is on the way for waterlogged Queenstown with up to 300mm of rain predicted to fall in some parts of the Southern Alps over the next couple of days.

Weather Analyst Philip Duncan says a slow moving rain band in the Tasman Sea coupled with a large blocking high to the north east means rainfall amounts could be very high.  "We're starting to see the winter storms inching further north and with the lingering highs in the north the fronts can't quickly move through".

Queenstown is bracing itself for a slow flood today as Lake Wakatipu slowly rises and spreads into the lower CBD.

Strong winds today are expected to create waves which could cause more complications.

WeatherWatch.co.nz reader Alison Metherell snapped these pictures yesterday in the pouring rain.

The lake is rising at 1cm an hour and is expected to continue to rise all day.

No let up in South Island rain

WeatherWatch.co.nz is this afternoon reporting that heavy rain along the South Island's southern and western regions is far from over as the low responsible continues to intensify and move closer.

Heavier rain over Southland has eased somewhat this afternoon but as the low approaches tonight heavy rain is expected to return.


Residents clean up after sudden storm

Residents in the lower North Island are cleaning up this morning after yesterday's storm.

In the Wellington region, roofs were blown off houses, fences were knocked down and there were power outages when southerly winds gusting to 120 kilometres an hour and torrential rain blasted through from the South Island during the afternoon.

Hamilton in for another electrical storm?

Severe thunderstorms are affecting the Pukekohe, Southern Waikato and Wairarapa areas this evening but the main band south of Hamilton has caught the attention of WeatherWatch.co.nz forecasters.

As of 5:30pm the storm cells were again moving over Lake Karapiro and towards Hamilton City.
