This week is an exceptionally busy weather week around the New Zealand area with a tropical cyclone (Keni) which may bring severe weather to Fiji in the coming day or two but then may merge to create an especially large low pressure system to the east of the country.

Two tropical cyclones are to the north of New Zealand, 1 a number storm directly north of us called Josie and the other is Iris in the Coral Sea which Australians renamed over the weekend.

Tropical Cyclone Iris has today formed just west of Vanuatu and while not a major storm the tropical low pressure system may linger in the Vanuatu / New Caledonia area for a full week, potentially longer.

Cyclone develops over Coral Sea, some remnants may reach northern NZ

A small tropical cyclone has formed in the Coral Sea according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center Tuesday morning. Australian forecasters will be responsible for naming it, which should/may happen today and if so it will be named Linda. Australian forecasters are still only calling it a "tropical low" as of 10am NZDT.


Cyclone Hola now heading to New Zealand, main threat is Monday (+8 maps)

UPDATE: Cyclone Hola is over open waters and now directly heading for northern New Zealand. Cloud associated with the storm is already spreading south over the North Island although winds are not expected to really ramp up until Monday.

Hola remains a category 2 cyclone but is weakening today as it rushes south eastwards away from the equator.


Cyclone Hola hitting parts of New Caledonia today, then tracks towards NZ (+4 Maps)

Tropical Cyclone Hola is today crossing the eastern Loyalty Islands in New Caledonia as a Category 3 storm with sustained winds of 130km/h and gusts to near 170km/h at the centre. Central air pressure is at 971hPa this morning.

Cyclone Hola has weakened a little today and is now tracking southwards towards New Caledonia then over the weekend it speeds up and heads towards New Zealand.
