Here's a list of the upcoming storm names for the Atlantic and Pacific. 

The Atlantic ones are most likely to make the news headlines...that's because the direction they move in takes them towards populated places such as the United States of America, Mexico, Cuba and the Caribbean.  


Atlantic storm season about to tip

The scales are about to tip with the Atlantic Hurricane season as a broad area of low pressure and thunderstorms moves off Africa and towards the United States.


Atlantic quickly waking up

The Atlantic is today quickly coming to life with three areas of concern for American forecasters.

TD-2 is hovering around 10km/h below Tropical Storm status and that is expected to change anywhere within the next hour or two through until tomorrow NZT. If TD-2 does become a tropical-storm it will be named Ana.


Atlantic Hurricane season finally waking up

The second tropical depression of the Atlantic Hurricane season formed Wednesday morning NZT and indicates that favourable storm conditions may now be forming.

Tropical Depression 2, known as TD-2, has formed roughly well out in the Atlantic Ocean and is continuing to deepen. 


Fears for 400 after Taiwan mudslide

An estimated 400 Taiwanese are unaccounted for after a mudslide spawned by Typhoon Morakot struck their isolated mountain village, a police official said yesterday, and a newspaper quoted a resident as saying as many as 600 were buried.

A hotel that was six storeys high collapses and is swept away in Chihpen, Taiwan after torrential rain from Typhoon Morakot caused the island's worst flooding in half a century.

Three people died and 31 were reported missing.

141 now thought to have been lost in ferry disaster

The number of people believed to have been on board the Tongan ferry Princess Ashika when it sank on Wednesday has risen to 141.

Maritime New Zealand, who are involved in the search for survivors, this morning had the figure at 120.


Deadly Typhoon Marakot drenches Taiwan: VIDEO, Images...

Typhoon Morakot is currently nearly stalled over the island nation of Taiwan. It is packing top winds of about 90 mph but it's not the winds that will make Morakot a news headline.

Current conditions: Taipei, Taiwan

Due to its sluggish movement, the rainfall from the typhoon will be prolific and is already causing flooding over the island.
 


Tropics: Taiwan braces for severe storm; Hawaii may be spared

Over in the western Pacific basin, Typhoon Morakot is forecast to continue to strengthen, possibly to category 2 or low-end category 3 status, while moving west. It should move across northern Taiwan this morning and impact coastal China by tonight or tomorrow.

Morakot is a large typhoon in size - it is wider than the length of New Zealand - and its impacts will likely be felt throughout the region.


Up to 117 people may be missing in ferry disaster

Up to 117 people are now believed to have been on board the Princess Ashika when it sunk late on Wednesday night.

Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand mission coordinator John Dixon said there are still 62 people unaccounted for and two confirmed dead.

"There is still a significant amount of debris in the water, and we will be targeting those areas.
