PLEASE ALSO ADD YOUR REPORT TO FIREBALLS AOTEAROA:

Fireball Aotearoa is a collaboration between scientists at the Universities of Canterbury and Otago, and citizen scientists who operate meteor observation cameras across Aotearoa New Zealand. Their aim is to recover freshly-fallen meteorites following fireball events. Simply go here to do this:  https://fireballs.nz/about/

Saw this too. At first it was an orange light moving slowly but steadily sort of west to east, I thought it was a plane but realised it had no flashing lights and was starting to form a tail behind. It gradually got brighter and appeared to break apart and form a thicker lumpy tail. There seemed to be many leading brighter bits. I thought space junk burning up. As it was about 0612 the sun was still over the horizon but as this thing was falling at a very shallow angle and still extremely high , its tail ( vapour trail ? ) was highlighted by sunlight and was very bright. I never saw it burnout or stop leaving a decent trail as it disappeared near the horizon out to sea over Hawke’s Bay. I noticed that the trail was very long and followed a curve. My passenger managed to take 3 not very good videos but better than none I guess. It was certainly not something I’ve ever seen before as I’ve seen quite a few meteors and this thing was in a class of its own.

I saw a large, long Meteor or Comet this morning (Tues 17th March 2026) around 6:14am when I opened the curtains to look at the sunrise. I saw it’s relatively slow moving large orange head and its long stream or tail. We live in rural Omanawa, near Tauranga off SH36. I was looking towards the East and it showed on the horizon in the direction of the sunrise, towards Oropi, and I guess in the trajectory towards Matata. … Given it showed for a few minutes, the info on Fireballs NZ website suggests it is not a Fireball or a Re-entry. I watched in awe as the large, orange head and yellow stream moved through the sky and behind neighbouring trees across the road. I had time to look for my phone, come back, watch some more, leave again and look for my pocket camera, and although I missed photographing the head – due to just enjoying the spectacle – I still had time to photograph the stream left behind, that faded after a few minutes. I have 6 quite good photos, the last at 6:17am.
