PLEASE ALSO ADD YOUR REPORT TO FIREBALLS AOTEAROA:
Fireball Aotearoa is a collaboration between scientists at the Universities of Canterbury and Otago, and citizen scientists who operate meteor observation cameras across Aotearoa New Zealand. Their aim is to recover freshly-fallen meteorites following fireball events. Simply go here to do this: https://fireballs.nz/about/
Please do not email us as we can’t reply to meteor reports – due to the overwhelming volume of normal daily sightings. Please do not be offended if you do not hear back from us about a meteor sighting or light sighting in the sky.
Please note – we may share your email address with Fireballs NZ if they request to follow up on any casual sightings. Please be ok with this possibility when you share your email address with WeatherWatch.co.nz. Thanks!

Meteor west of Carterton 9.20pm, brief, fairly steep angle, but bright blue and orange. Look like it may have made the ground.

Saw this too. At first it was an orange light moving slowly but steadily sort of west to east, I thought it was a plane but realised it had no flashing lights and was starting to form a tail behind. It gradually got brighter and appeared to break apart and form a thicker lumpy tail. There seemed to be many leading brighter bits. I thought space junk burning up. As it was about 0612 the sun was still over the horizon but as this thing was falling at a very shallow angle and still extremely high , its tail ( vapour trail ? ) was highlighted by sunlight and was very bright. I never saw it burnout or stop leaving a decent trail as it disappeared near the horizon out to sea over Hawke’s Bay. I noticed that the trail was very long and followed a curve. My passenger managed to take 3 not very good videos but better than none I guess. It was certainly not something I’ve ever seen before as I’ve seen quite a few meteors and this thing was in a class of its own.
