PLEASE ALSO ADD YOUR REPORT TO FIREBALLS AOTEAROA:

Fireball Aotearoa is a collaboration between scientists at the Universities of Canterbury and Otago, and citizen scientists who operate meteor observation cameras across Aotearoa New Zealand. Their aim is to recover freshly-fallen meteorites following fireball events. Simply go here to do this:  https://fireballs.nz/about/

Please do not email us as we can’t reply to meteor reports – due to the overwhelming volume of normal daily sightings. Please do not be offended if you do not hear back from us about a meteor sighting or light sighting in the sky.

Please note – we may share your email address with Fireballs NZ if they request to follow up on any casual sightings. Please be ok with this possibility when you share your email address with WeatherWatch.co.nz. Thanks!

I saw the same lights heading north bound at the back of waikanae 30/01/2026 earlier in the evening and then another bright green ball with a long almost fluorescent tail over levin heading south at around 11:45pm.
To see one was amazing but two in one night going in opposite directions….. Just wow ….

Saw the same meteor very clearly at 11:20pm on 30/01/26 in the Lilburn Valley, Southland. A bright blue flash lit up the sky followed by the stunning green and blue trail it left behind which lasted about 30 seconds to one minute before fading out. Very cool to witness.

I’m in Te Horo beach and witnessed this meteor around 11.45pm ish. It traveled low, from the eastern horizon, over Wellington, blue-green tail, disappeared into cook strait. Très magnifique!

I saw the same meteor that is mentioned in comments below. 30/01/2026, at around 11:30. Huge light flash caught my eye, the travelled at speed leaving a long blue-greenish tail and smoke lingering around after it. Saw it from French Farm/Akaroa way, south of us travelling east to west. Never seen anything big like it.
