Meteors – Your Eyewitness Reports!

WeatherWatch.co.nz receives meteor reports from all over New Zealand and the globe, 24/7/365.

**CASUAL COMMENTS**
If you’ve seen something in the sky please post a comment below – it’s easy to do and don’t forget to tell us where you’re from!

**FORMAL REPORT**

PLEASE ALSO ADD YOUR REPORT TO FIREBALLS AOTEAROA:

Fireball Aotearoa is a collaboration between scientists at the Universities of Canterbury and Otago, and citizen scientists who operate meteor observation cameras across Aotearoa New Zealand. Their aim is to recover freshly-fallen meteorites following fireball events. Simply go here to do this:  https://fireballs.nz/about/

Please do not email us as we can’t reply to meteor reports – due to the overwhelming volume of normal daily sightings. Please do not be offended if you do not hear back from us about a meteor sighting or light sighting in the sky.

Please note – we may share your email address with Fireballs NZ if they request to follow up on any casual sightings. Please be ok with this possibility when you share your email address with WeatherWatch.co.nz. Thanks!

At about 8.30pm on the 15th October, my wife and I saw a large, fast moving object travelling North- South. It had a blueish tail for a moment before the entire onject rapidly tuerned red and disappeared from view.

Te Puke. Just before 2am I had got up for a glass of water. While I was drinking it I was facing the kitchen window which faces east. A little to the right (so more SE) I saw a bright green fireball disappear over the roof of the house next door. Without my glasses it wasn’t as clear as I’d like but the colour was definite.

I saw fireball from Waitara West Beach camp around 9.20pm ish. Low in sky and would say landed not too far on east side of river, bright, lost sight when trees blocked view. I did fill in the long form questions and emailed to you.

I was walking our dog at around 5:40am in Te Miro, Waikato when I saw the strangest thing in the east- south eastern sky. It looked like something had entered the atmosphere and then blown up. A very strange cloud formed and a piece dropped rapidly toward the horizon. It moved faster than a satellite. I have pics.

I’m in Marton, walking dog at 23.20ish, believe I saw quite a large falling star South West of town, perhaps Tangimoana way.

Just wanted to say, if you see it in the sky, it’s a meteor, if it hits the ground, it’s a meteorite.
