Friday’s headlines (x3): North Island front, Settled on Saturday, Northwesterlies build on Sunday

Here’s what is making the weather headlines today….

FRONT MOVES OVER NORTH ISLAND

Some widespread rain for the North Island today thanks to a front that moves through, northwesterlies precede the front then changing southwest in behind this afternoon.

There are a few rain watches out from Metservice, you can check them out here.

We also have a risk of thunderstorms, check out today’s risk charts from Metservice here.

WEAK RIDGE ON SATURDAY

Some settled weather moves in on Saturday thanks to a weak ridge of high pressure. The West Coast of the South Island has a few clouds though and maybe even a few showers, Fiordland sees rain.

Canterbury, Nelson and eastern Bay Of Plenty will be the places to be. Plenty will have a good day but those areas have the combination of the lightest winds, sun and warm temperatures. Eastern Bay Of Plenty tops the list though with high’s in the mid twenties.

NORTHWEST AIRFLOW BUILDS ON SUNDAY

A couple of fronts bunch up to the southwest of New Zealand on Sunday, isobars start to crunch up over the country bringing in an increasing northwest airflow. Winds fortunately aren’t looking to be overly strong, through Cook Strait northerlies may be strong though.

Expect a few showers in the west of both Islands, rain moves into South Westland with heavy falls. Temperatures pop for eastern regions reaching into the mid twenties, perhaps even 27 for parts of Canterbury.

Overnight and into Monday temperatures drop for the South Island as a cold southwest change spreads northwards.
