Weekend’s News: Warm temperatures – Rain outlook – Weather on Sunday

Here’s what is making the weather headlines this weekend….

WARM TEMPERATURES

A northerly airflow brings warm temperatures to parts of the country today, especially the South Island, more specifically Southland and areas east of the Main Divide. Coastal spots like coastal Otago and coastal Canterbury may be a bit cooler than further inland however thanks to onshore winds.

For the North Island temperatures will be warm today for the Manawatu up through to Waikato thanks to light winds and sunny skies. Elsewhere will see good temperatures too, the aforementioned spots will be the warmest and most pleasant.

RAIN OUTLOOK

Very much a westerly quarter pattern for the next seven days in terms of airflow and where our weather is coming from as can be seen in the precipitation percentage of normal map below.

The West Coast picks up the most rain, the bulk of this arrives tomorrow (Sunday) and then Wed / Thu next week.

The precipitation percentage of normal map below runs through to Thursday 14th September. Blue coloring means that part of the country is likely to see more rainfall than would normally be expected at this time of year, red means less rainfall is expected and white is an average amount of rainfall. The more intense either red or blue then either scenario is more true.

WEATHER ON SUNDAY

A front pushes northwards over the South Island today bringing heavy rain to the West Coast, northerly quarter winds ahead of the front then changing to the westerly quarter in behind.

North Island

Northerly winds with cloudy areas and the odd shower in the west, showers becoming a little more extensive in the afternoon. Out east conditions are mostly sunny but expect some high cloud. Overnight rain moves into Taranaki.

South Island

Cloudy for the West Coast, heavy rain pushes northwards during the day but easing in behind back to showers (Please use our rain maps here for the timing of this front). Showers for Nelson and Marlborough (perhaps just a few spits for eastern Marlborough), overnight rain moves in thanks to our front. Along the east coast it’s a mainly dry day with high cloud, there could be a few spots of rain spill over from the west thanks to our front as it moves northwards. Northerly winds may get a bit gusty especially for inland areas, easing later today. Sun should break through for Southland and Otago this afternoon as the front moves northwards, overnight expect a few coastal showers for Southland as another front heading in from the southwest draws near.
