Newsfeed: Happy New Year, NZ! + whole new ball game from Jan 1, 2024

Updated Midnight — Happy New Year!

A cold front is very slowly moving up and over the North Island from the west, as a colder change moves up the South Island.

By Monday morning everywhere will be cooler and less humid as high pressure moves in with a sou’west change.

There is a band of heavy rain and showers – and lighter patchier falls in between – moving in from the Tasman Sea over the upper North Island. Track it now on Rain Radar.

NEW YEARS EVE
The all important New Years Eve forecast is looking quite unsettled, eastern regions on average will be drier than out west but a south to southwest change does move north through Canterbury late afternoon and into the evening and may produce a few isolated heavy downpours, lightning and hail.

The eastern North Island may see a few spits of rain in the evening as a front passes over. The western / upper North Island has showers then rain from as a front moves in, easing overnight. Interestingly the top of the South Island (Nelson / Marlborough) has rain but this clears up in the afternoon to leave a dry evening. Showers moving through Southland and Otago in the afternoon then Canterbury later in the day could be heavy with thunderstorms and hail. Showers clear the lower South Island later in the evening or overnight but may remain for coastal Southland.

High pressure moves in for New Years Day with remaining morning showers clearing and sun increasing, only the West Coast has a few showers persist for much of the day.

It’s all about what happens on Saturday 6th! Metvuw and Metservice show rain. Will camping north of Auckland still happen through that weekend? Such profound, life-changing questions, eh.
