Wednesday’s national forecast – Very unsettled

An area of low pressure moves over New Zealand today bringing rain or showers to most regions, perhaps unstable for some. Northerly quarter winds change around to the south as the low passes out to the ease.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Rain, perhaps a few heavy falls, easing to showers late afternoon or evening as northwesterlies change gusty southwest.
Highs: 20-21

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Showers, chance of a heavy fall and thunderstorm then easing in the evening. Northwesterlies change more to the west this afternoon.
Highs: 18-20

Eastern North Island

Plenty of high cloud with scattered rain spreading from the west, clearing in the evening with north to northwesterly winds. Later in the evening we also see a southerly change for Wairarapa bringing rain.
Highs: 22-24

Wellington

Cloudy periods with occasional showers, sunny areas develop in the afternoon. Rain in the evening as strong northerlies change to the south.
Highs: 19-20

Marlborough & Nelson

Partly cloudy with the odd spit or shower, clearing in the evening for Nelson at which point some rain moves into Marlborough, possibly heavy with thunderstorms and hail. Gusty north to northwesterly winds change southerly later in the day.
Highs: 21-24

Canterbury

A dry morning with some high cloud, a fresh southerly change moves northwards from midday bringing showers, possibly heavy with thunderstorms and hail then easing in the evening.
Highs: 19-23

West Coast

Rain early in the morning eases to showers, further rain develops around midday then easing evening as southwesterlies freshen.
Highs: 17-18

Southland & Otago
Showers, perhaps some rain for inland areas, North Otago may have a heavy fall with thunder and hail then clearing in the evening. Southwesterlies, gusty about the coast.
Highs: 15-18
