Weather headlines (x3) for Tuesday: Heavy rain West Coast, Strong northeasterly winds, Warm temperatures

Here’s what is making the weather headlines today.

RAIN HEAVY AT TIMES FOR THE WEST COAST

The weather stories this week may sound a little repetitive, heavy rain for the West Coast and top of the South Island, potentially strong northeasterly winds, finally; warm temperatures in the north and east.

But yes today we start to see some heavy rain for the West Coast, while rain does get into Nelson it doesn’t look too bad there just yet, perhaps though for Tasman it may be heavy. Map below showing today’s rainfall for the West Coast and Nelson, light rain or drizzle elsewhere where there is some precipitation.

Looking further into the future, the accumulative rainfall map out to Sunday 21st August shows where the most rain will be over the next six days. The West Coast and Tasman clearly get the most but Nelson and parts of the Marlborough Sounds are not far behind.

STRONG NORTHEASTERLY WINDS

Later today and into tomorrow, northeasterly winds for the North Island, through Cook Strait and about the top of the South Island look to be strong with gales likely for coastal areas.

These strong winds continue on Thursday, strengthening more about eastern parts of the North Island too then finally easing on Friday.

Any wind watches and warnings from Metservice will be displayed here.

NORTHERLIES BRING WARM TEMPERATURES

It may be unsettled this week but at least it shouldn’t be too cold, the upper North Island and eastern regions in particularly should regularly reach into the late teens.

Saturday we step it up a notch with high’s in the early twenties likely in the east.
