Weather headlines (x3) for Thursday: Warm night in the east, Heavy rain eases, Strong northwesterlies ease

Here’s what is making the weather headlines today.

WARM NIGHT IN THE EAST

Temperatures in the east Canterbury northwards were a bit warm last night with overnight lows in the late teens. This thanks to a strong northerly airflow, plenty of high cloud and warm temperatures in the upper atmosphere which helped drag up surface temps.

Temperatures around the 850mb level (1500m above sea level) were between 10 to 12 degrees, for the eastern North Island this was as high as 14 degrees. Tomorrow night when overnight lows will be cooler temperatures at this level drop to between 4 and 6 degrees, 8 to 10 degrees north of Napier.

HEAVY RAIN EASES – WEST COAST

Heavy rain for the West Coast eases this morning as a front pushes away to the north. As this front crosses over the North Island, while it does bring rain out west it won’t be as heavy as what the West Coast got.

Rain clears Nelson and Marlborough to sun this afternoon.

STRONG NORTHWESTERLIES EASE

The upper South Island and through Cook Strait has a strong to gale northwesterly airflow but it will start to ease from this afternoon.
