Thunderstorms move south, more coming for the north tonight

Heavy weather is moving down the North Island.

Thunderstorms, hail and even a few small tornadoes are expected through Waitomo, Taumarunui and Taranaki this afternoon.

Central Auckland took a drenching, which caused superficial flooding on some roads, during the lunch hour.

Auckland recorded some 600 lightning strikes in the space of an hour many of which were cloud to ground.

Reports of funnel clouds came in from northern parts of the city.

Rainfall amounts varied across the city, and across reigons, as has been the case with this system all week.

The rain band that hit Auckland and Northland earlier this afternoon is now slowly trekking across Bay of Plenty.

And more thunderstorms are on the way as the low moves in.  WeatherWatch.co.nz expects another band to arrive tonight to many in the north with more thunder, lightning, hail and the risk of tornados.

Taranaki will be most exposed to the severe weather with the centre of the low moving in there.

Been mostly calm this afternoon in this part of town, lot of warm sunshine actually so I have no clues as to where that rain and thunderstorms went. Have had none so far, cannot say I am not happy with that, just the rain will do.
Ground is looking healthier than it has for a very long time.

Just had a big hose down here at the Mount. The roads were literally turned in to ponds. Not much thunder though. Kinda disappointing. All this ho-ha for nothing, unless there’s more coming our way

This so called storm is totally disappointing that im now ready for some really cold weather and overnight lows dipping into the really low single numbers… 2-3c etc…. The way it seems is Auckland will struggle to hit 500mm this year and you guys will tell us the drought is over…. so far this month at the half way point we’ve had 11mm……. yep drought over…… bring on the cold temps….

Thanks again….. Im happy that Taranaki and the Bay of Plenty are getting the thunder…. We have a huge Liquid Amber tree out the front of our house and its totally confused… it thinks its spring…..
