Monday’s News: Warm temperatures – Heavy rain West Coast – Westerly pattern this week

Here’s what is making the weather headlines today…..

WARM TEMPERATURES, COOLING DOWN WEDNESDAY SOUTH ISLAND

A northwesterly airflow lies over the country today and tomorrow, eastern regions and most of the North Island has warm temperatures, reaching into the low to mid twenties.

Wednesday cools down for the east of the South Island thanks to cloud and onshore winds. The West Coast during this period will have consistently cooler weather thanks to cloud, showers / rain and westerly quarter winds.

HEAVY RAIN WEST COAST

A front moves north over the South Island today, although it is fairly slow in moving. Most of the ‘heavy rain’ with this front falls in South Westland but some may make it a bit further north.

A few warnings have been issued by Metservice, you can view them here.

TYPICAL WESTERLY PATTERN THIS WEEK

Going by the most recent precipitation percentage of normal map you can see most of the country is looking drier than normal in relation to the amount of rain expected over the next seven days and the average. A westerly pattern brings in this dynamic so naturally western regions pick up more rain than in the east.

The West Coast sees more rainfall than could normally be expected for this time of year thanks to a few fronts, one today and another later on Thursday overnight into Friday.

The precipitation percentage of normal map below runs through to Monday 20th November. Blue coloring means that part of the country is likely to see more rainfall than would normally be expected at this time of year, red means less rainfall is expected and white is an average amount of rainfall. The more intense either red or blue then either scenario is more true.
