Friday’s national forecast – Unstable in the south

A light northerly quarter airflow lies over the country today, humidity and temperatures are certainly up. Instability occurs also especially for parts of the South Island and perhaps parts of the lower North Island and Northland.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Partly cloudy and humid with the odd shower, more so in the east. Northeasterly winds.
Highs: 22-25

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Mostly cloudy with the odd shower, showers may become heavy with thunder in the afternoon, especially away from the coast, clearing at night. Light winds.
Highs: 22-27

Eastern North Island

A mix of sun and cloud, a few showers south of Napier, showers may become heavy in the afternoon about the ranges with some thunder then easing evening. North to northeasterly winds.
Highs: 23-27

Wellington

Mostly cloudy, the odd spit or shower possible. Breezy northerly winds.
Highs: 22-26

Marlborough & Nelson

Mostly cloudy, the odd spit or shower about, more so for Nelson and the Sounds, perhaps a little drier for eastern Marlborough. Northerly winds.
Highs: 21-25

Canterbury

Sunny spells and quite humid, isolated showers develop in the afternoon, one or two could be heavy with thunder then clearing at night, more likely for South Canterbury, further north conditions are looking drier. Light winds.
Highs: 24-28

West Coast

Mostly cloudy with showers or some rain, Buller may have a dry start. Overnight conditions dry out. Northeasterly winds.
Highs: 20-22

Southland & Otago
Morning sunny spells, showers develop in the afternoon, some may become heavy with thunderstorms especially for inland areas then showers turning to more widespread rain, clearing overnight. Light winds tending to the south about coastal areas from midday.
Highs: 21-27
