Friday’s national forecast – Fronts push on in

A warm front passes away to the east of the South Island today meanwhile an occluded front moves onto the West Coast bringing heavy rain. The North Island is more settled with high pressure.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Partly cloudy, chance of an afternoon shower otherwise mainly dry. Light northerly quarter winds.
Highs: 20-22

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Partly cloudy, Taranaki is a little cloudier with the odd shower possible. North to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 17-21

Eastern North Island

Sun and some high cloud. Light winds, afternoon easterlies for Hawkes Bay.
Highs: 21-24

Wellington

Cloudy areas, chance of a spit or shower. Gusty north to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 17-19

Marlborough & Nelson

A mix of mid and high level cloud for Marlborough, spits of rain about the Sounds. Northwesterlies pick up from afternoon. Nelson has cloudier skies with some scattered rain, more so from afternoon, northerlies.
Highs: 17-20

Canterbury

Morning scattered rain clears, becoming brighter in the afternoon as northeasterlies tend more to the north.
Highs: 19-21

West Coast

Rain with a few heavy falls, easing in the afternoon as gusty northeasterlies tend more to the north. Heavy rain moves back in at night.
Highs: 16-17

Southland & Otago
Some morning scattered rain then a few sunny spells break through as light northeasterlies tend to the north, further rain or showers may develop this afternoon especially for Southland then clearing later on. Winds stick to the northeast all day for coastal Otago.
Highs: 18-22
