Autumn westerlies kick in, large weekend low coming

This week we switch gears, shifting into a more classic Autumn weather pattern with cold fronts, windy westerlies and nor’westers, and temperature fluctuations. Colder airflows affect the southern half of the South Island in particular, while windy W to NW winds are off and on this week in a number of regions.

The westerly flow means most wet weather is on the western side of the country, especially the West Coast.

Another colder southerly develops this weekend – but so too does a large low. Large low’s don’t always bring severe weather, as the energy is spread out over a couple thousand kilometres, rather than a couple hundred kilometres like we had with Cyclone Vaianu, but we may have some pockets of wind and rain warnings around some parts of NZ this weekend.

Programming Note:
Following a very busy weekend and past week we have no weather video updates on Tuesday, April 14 – Phil will catch you again on Wednesday for our next NZ weather outlook.
