Weather headlines (x3) for Monday: Afternoon instability today, Heavy rain far north, Heavy rain upper NI on Tuesday

Here’s what is making the weather headlines today.

AFTERNOON INSTABILITY

It’s quite muggy out there and this lower level humidity plus some afternoon heating leads to a few downpours and thunderstorms.

Thunderstorms have the potential to occur for inland parts of the lower North Island and inland parts of the upper South Island. For more details check out today’s thunderstorms outlook from Metservice here.

HEAVY RAIN FAR NORTH TODAY

Heavy rain starts to arrive in the far north today, so eastern and northern Northland, more so from afternoon. This rain develops on a front which slowly pushes southwards over the upper North Island on Tuesday and will be of great concern considering the recent deluge’s that have occurred. More in the next headline…..

HEAVY RAIN UPPER NORTH ISLAND – TUESDAY

A slow moving front at this stage in weather models looks to bring more heavy rain into Northland and Auckland on Tuesday, Northland more so in the 1st half of the day, Auckland into the second half of the day.

Metservice will have watches and warnings coming out as we move forward so check them out here.

If some of that rain (in a less torrential way but still a decent amount) could move into the eastern South Island that would be helpful as it’s looking quite dry there at the moment and unfortunately there is no relief over the next week or two. The precipitation percentage of normal map below shows for the week ahead the eastern South Island is looking dry i.e. little if any rainfall compared to the historical average for this time of year. The upper North Island by contrast is showing plenty of rain this week.

The upper North Island last year at this time was very dry so quite a turn around…….. too much of a turn around.
