Damaging gales continued overnight in Te Aroha and other eastern Waikato regions as the easterly flow between a Tasman Sea low and a large high near the South Island pushes over the Kaimai Ranges.

Those winds ease gradually across Friday and northern NZ remains fairly mild.

Next week a cold change on Tuesday moves up the entire country with a colder Wednesday for NZ.
