Tuesday’s national forecast

The main front that caused all the recent wind and rain issues across the country finally moves away to the northeast of New Zealand this afternoon. The air flow left behind is fairly cool from the west or southwest, some snow is even possible about the far south of the South Island to 500m.

Auckland & Northland
Morning rain with a few heavy falls, gusty northerlies change southwest late morning or around midday with rain mostly clearing. For the afternoon expect sunny spells with the risk of the odd remaining shower about. Winds will be gusty from the west or southwest.

Bay Of Plenty, Waikato & Central North Island
Rain in the morning possibly heavy with brisk north to northwesterly winds, rain eases to showers around midday with a west to southwest change then clears. Sunny spells develop in the afternoon. Later in the evening some cloud and the odd shower may push into western parts of the Central North Island.
Highs: 14-17

Eastern North Island
For the Wairarapa and Hawkes Bay. Morning rain with a westerly change, rain clears around midday then becoming mostly sunny in the afternoon with winds easing. Later in the evening westerlies may pick up again. About Gisborne expect strong northwesterlies in the morning gusting to gale at times with thick high cloud, the odd spot of rain too. Rain develops around midday with a southwest change then clears by evening with skies clearing up.

Western North Island
Morning rain clears, expect sunny spells mid to late morning onwards with westerly breezes. Westerlies a little brisk at times mid afternoon onwards, there may also be a shower or two from later in the evening.
Highs: 14-15

Wellington
Any early showers clear then becoming mostly sunny, westerly winds. In the evening westerlies freshen bringing some cloud and the risk of a shower any of which clear around midnight.
High: 14

Nelson
Becoming mostly sunny in the morning, westerly winds.
Highs: 15-16

Marlborough
Early cloud clears to a mostly sunny day, light winds. Late afternoon or evening westerly winds pick up with some cloud, there is the chance of a shower also otherwise remaining dry.
Highs: 15-16

Canterbury
Sunny with light winds, late afternoon or evening winds change south to southwesterly bringing showers mainly near the coast, possibly heavy with thunderstorms and hail then clearing around midnight.
Highs: 14-15

West Coast
Showers with cool west to southwest winds, perhaps some small hail at times too.
High: 11

Coastal Otago
Sunny spells with brisk westerly winds. A few showers develop mid to late afternoon with winds tending a little more southwest, showers could be heavy with a risk of hail then clearing later in the evening. Some snow to 600m with any shower activity.
High: 12

Central Otago
Cloudy spells with showers, a risk of hail too then clearing in the evening. A few snow flurries to 600m. Cool westerly winds.
High: 10

Southland
Showers, some may be heavy at times with hail. Brisk westerly winds ease later in the evening with showers easing too. Snow flurries to 500m.
High: 9
