Thursday’s national forecast – Dry for most

Broadly speaking a northerly quarter airflow lies over the country today and most are dry, rain for the West Coast overnight is heavy as a front moves in from the Tasman.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty A mix of sun and cloud, west to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 20 – 21


Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Partly cloudy, a shower or two for Kapiti and Taranaki. Northwesterly winds.
Highs: 18 – 20

Eastern North Island
Mostly sunny with some high cloud, mid level cloud at times south of Napier. Winds tend northwest, east to northeast in the afternoon for Hawkes Bay and Gisborne.
Highs: 21 – 24


Wellington
Cloudy areas, the odd spit or shower, mainly in the north. Strong northwesterlies, gusting to gale through Cook Strait.
Highs: 17 – 19


Marlborough & Nelson
Mostly sunny, there may be some mid and high level cloud. North to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 20 – 23


Canterbury
Any early cloud clears then mostly sunny, northerlies inland, winds tend easterly near the coast.
Highs: 19 – 22


West Coast
Partly cloudy, showers for Fiordland. Rain overnight for most with heavy falls. Light winds tend northeast around midday.
Highs: 14 – 18


Southland & Otago
A mix of sun and cloud, morning showers clear coastal Otago, rain overnight for Southland. North to northwesterly winds, northeasterlies for coastal Otago.
Highs: 18 – 22
