Thursday’s national forecast

A large anticyclone to the east of New Zealand and a low in the Tasman Sea drags down a northerly airflow over the country today.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Some morning fog possible then expect increasing cloud for most. The odd shower about Coromandel and Bay Of Plenty from morning then elsewhere from afternoon. Rain moves into Northland and Coromandel by evening. East to northeasterly winds.
Highs: 14-16

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
May be some morning fog (especially inland areas) then expect sunny areas and some cloud. Taranaki has a mostly cloudy day with the odd shower, the odd shower may spread to other areas from afternoon but still fairly dry overall. Light easterly quarter winds.
Highs: 12-15

Eastern North Island
Cloudy areas and occasional sun, a few light showers about (especially for Gisborne) but many long dry spells too. East to northeasterly winds.
Highs: 13-15

Wellington
A mix of sun and cloud, light easterly quarter winds.
High: 14

Marlborough & Nelson
Morning cloud for eastern coastal Marlborough then sunny spells, about the Sounds and Nelson conditions are cloudier with some drizzle or showers. Light north to northeasterly winds.
Highs: 13-14

Canterbury
Morning cloud low cloud or fog breaks then mostly sunny with some high cloud, could be an early shower especially about Banks Peninsula. Light east to northeasterly winds.
Highs: 10-12

West Coast
Sunny areas and some high cloud, there may be some mid level cloud about also especially about Buller from late afternoon. Light winds from the easterly quarter.
Highs: 13-15

Southland & Otago
Mostly sunny with a touch of high cloud, there may be some morning low cloud or fog especially about coastal Otago. Light northeasterly winds.
Highs: 10-12
