Thursday’s national forecast

A front moves over the North Island today while another pushes over the South Island bringing potentially unstable weather.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Morning sunny spells possible then a few showers develop in the afternoon, showers clear later in the evening. Northwesterly winds change southwest overnight.
Highs: 19-22

Western North Island (including Central North Island)

A few showers, possibly heavy for a time about the Central North Island towards midday then clearing early afternoon with sunny spells breaking through. West to northwesterly winds change southwest around midnight.
Highs: 17-18

Eastern North Island

Mostly sunny with some building high cloud, in the afternoon a few spells of rain move through spreading from the west then clearing in the evening as winds change southwest.
Highs: 23-26

Wellington

Cloudy areas, showers in the evening as northwesterly winds change southerly.
High: 17

Marlborough & Nelson

Sunny areas and some high cloud, late afternoon or evening north to northwesterly winds change southwest bringing showers some of which may be heavy with thunderstorms and hail then easing overnight.
Highs: 18-22

Canterbury

Cloudy with some rain about South Canterbury spreading into North Canterbury around midday, chance of a few heavy falls about parts of North Canterbury then easing overnight. Southwesterly winds.
Highs: 13-14

West Coast

Morning rain eases and clears around midday, although there is the low risk of a shower or two for the rest of the day. Sunny spells otherwise from afternoon onwards. Southwesterly winds.
Highs: 15-20

Southland & Otago

Morning sunny spells then afternoon showers possibly heavy with isolated thunderstorms and hail which clear later in the evening / overnight. Southwesterly winds.
Highs: 12-13
