Monday’s national forecast

A west to southwesterly airflow lies over the country today, conditions will be mainly dry out east for both Islands while in the west there may be a shower now and then. Conditions are somewhat in an easing trend today before a frontal system moves onto the lower South Island overnight.

Auckland & Northland
Cloudy spells with sunny breaks at times, a few showers pass through early this morning then in the afternoon and evening the odd one moves through now and then. West to southwest breezes.
Highs: 14-15

Bay Of Plenty, Waikato & Central North Island
Mostly sunny with west to southwest breezes. About western parts of the Central North Island and the Waikato there could be the odd shower, mainly this morning.
Highs: 10-13

Eastern North Island
Sunny with west to southwest breezes, easing in the evening. There could be a brief shower move through in the afternoon however.
Highs: 13-14

Western North Island
Cloudy spells with showers at times, clearing at night. There could be a few sunny breaks too. Westerly breezes.
Highs: 12-13

Wellington
Mostly sunny with some cloud at times, morning westerlies tend more southerly by midday.
High: 12

Marlborough & Nelson
Sunny with light winds, westerly breezes ease off about Marlborough in the morning.
Highs: 11-13

Canterbury
Sunny. Southwesterly breezes near the coast die out by evening. Becoming frosty at night. Out on Banks Peninsula there is the low risk of a brief shower in the afternoon.
High: 10-12

West Coast
The odd shower and snow flurry to 400m clearing around late morning. Sunny spells more frequent from midday with southwesterly winds easing. Rain and thunderstorms push into Fiordland in the evening then further north overnight. Expect snow about Fiordland to 500m overnight.

Coastal Otago
Cloudy periods in the morning, a few showers with small hail passing through for a time. The odd snow flurry to 300m also then clearing around midday. Shower activity could be quite restricted to areas south of about Dunedin, further north sunnier conditions are more likely all day. South of Dunedin expect weather to become sunny in the afternoon with west to southwest winds easing. Later in the evening some high cloud develops.

Central Otago
Sunny with a few clouds about, west to northwest winds. Some high cloud develops in the evening then overnight a southwest change moves through with wintry showers and snow to 400m.
Highs: 5-6

Southland
Showers, small hail at times and snow flurries to 300m clear by midday then expect sunny areas to develop in the afternoon with westerlies easing. Come evening high cloud starts to increase then at night a southwest change brings further wintry showers and snow to 400m.
High: 8
