Frontal activity reinvigorates about the lower North Island on Thursday while another front moves out of the Tasman Sea onto the lower South Island late afternoon.

A mix of sun and cloud for the upper North Island on Thursday with west to northwesterly winds, cloud thickens in the evening with the odd patchy shower moving into the Waikato then further north later on or overnight.

Cloudy for the lower North Island, areas of rain becoming heavy in the afternoon out west then easing later in the evening as northerlies change westerly. Some rain in the east also about Napier southwards, clearing later in the evening. Gisborne is hot and dry with high cloud although a spot of rain is possible later in the evening.

Cloudy about Nelson and Marlborough with areas of rain moving in during the afternoon (heavy for northern parts) then easing in the evening. Banks Peninsula northwards for Canterbury has mainly cloudy skies, winds from the east or northeast. There may be a shower or drizzle patch for northern parts of North Canterbury in the afternoon then clearing in the evening. Morning cloud breaks to sunnier conditions further south in Canterbury.

Sun and cloud for the West Coast south of Greymouth, a few showers move into Buller during the afternoon then clearing in the evening. Rain moves into Fiordland during the afternoon, possibly heavy for a time in the evening.

A mix of sun and cloud about Southland and Otago, the odd shower possible although showers more likely in the evening.
