Heavy rain warnings issued for South Island

The crown forecaster has issued a number of rain warnins for the South Island today as a slow moving rain band moves in.

The rain is associated with a large area of low pressure in the Southern Ocean.

Westland

Heavy Rain Warning, Areas Affected: Westland south of Fox Glacier Rain is expected to become heavier this morning. In the 15 to 18 hours from 9am Monday expect 120 to 170mm of rain. Peak intensities of 25 to 35mm per hour are likely at times from late morning until early evening. Heavy Rain Warning, Areas Affected: Westland from Fox Glacier toArthurs Pass Rain is forecast to spread slowly north from this afternoon. In the 21 to 24 hours from about midday Monday expect 90 to 150mm of rain with the heaviest falls near the ranges where peak intensities of 20 to 25mm per hour are likely this afternoon and evening.

Fiordland

Heavy Rain Warning, Areas Affected: Fiordland north of Doubtful Sound In the 4 to 6 hours from 9am Monday expect 40 to 75mm of rain on top of what has already fallen with the heaviest falls from about Milford Sound northwards. Intensities are expected to reach 20 to 30mm per hour there mid/late morning.

Christchurch

Heavy Rain Warning, Areas Affected: Headwaters of the main lakes and rivers of Canterbury as far north as the Waimakariri River In the 15 to 18 hours from 9am Monday south of Mt Cook and in the 18 to 21 hours from 9am further north, expect 80 to 100mm of rain near the Main Divide and 30 to 50mm to spread 15km further east. Note that outbreaks of rain are forecast throughout Canterbury with a cool southerly change on Monday night and Tuesday morning. There could be 30 to 50mm over the plains and near the eastern foothills through to the afternoon or early evening on Tuesday.
