Friday’s national forecast

A westerly airflow lies over the country yet again. This time a front approaches the West Coast of the South Island making landfall about South Westland by midday then moves north to reach the lower North Island overnight.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato, CNI & BOP
A mix of sunny and cloudy spells with westerly winds, a few showers may pass through early in the afternoon about and north of Waikato. Bay Of Plenty remaining dry all day with sunnier conditions.
Highs: 17-21

Eastern North Island

Mostly sunny with some morning high cloud clearing, westerly winds.

Highs: 20-21

Western North Island

Any early showers clear then expect a mix of sunny and cloudy spells with westerly breezes a little brisk at times. Later in the evening cloud increases then a few showers develop mid way through the night.

Highs: 17-18

Wellington

Mostly sunny with a few clouds at times, expect brisk northwesterlies. Later in the evening skies become cloudy with northwesterlies becoming strong, a few showers move through overnight.

High: 17

Nelson

Mostly sunny at first, some cloud increases in the afternoon then overnight expect a period of showers. Westerly winds.

Highs: 18-19

Marlborough

Sunny with breezy northwesterlies, mild temperatures. High cloud thickens from later in the afternoon then overnight a few showers may spill over from the west especially about the western and outer sounds.

Highs: 20-21

Canterbury

Sunny with northwesterly breezes developing after midday, some high cloud increases in the afternoon also. In the evening there may be a few showers falling out of thick high cloud.

Highs: 19-20

West Coast

Showers with northwesterly breezes, heavy thundery falls develop about South Westland in the afternoon then move into North Westland in the evening. Rain eases overnight as northwesterlies change more westerly.

High: 16-17

Southland & Otago

Sunny and cloudy periods with breezy west to northwest winds. There may be a few showers at times spreading from the west for Southland. Central Otago particularly in the west sees some afternoon rain and a few showers may spread to the coast around the same time.

Highs: 13-16
