ClimateWatch: JUNE outlook as El Niño continues to build

June has kicked off in NEUTRAL again as far as El Niño is concerned, but it is expected to form in the coming weeks and there are some signs that the El Niño weather pattern is already forming around parts of NZ and Australia.

We discuss which areas are showing some signs of this. We also look at other climate drivers, such as the Indian Ocean Dipole (also neutral) and what is happening south of Australia and NZ which is much closer to home than where El Niño is measured.

But the rainfall forecast maps do have more of an El Niño look to them, especially in New Zealand with westerly rain and drier weather in the east, a pattern that has been developing over recent weeks.

As far as air pressure is concerned we see more northern placed high pressure zones and some large lows/storms south of both NZ and Australia.

ClimateWatch is a monthly outlook to make sense of the highs and lows shaping our weather pattern.

This video was reposted with intro corrected to say “JUNE” (not May!) 🤦🏻‍♂️
