For some Melbourne suburbs it has been the wettest June in over 50 years with three times the normal monthly average falling.

So far this month Essendon has picked up 115mm, nearly three times the average of 38mm. This makes it the wettest June in 58 years. Melbourne Airport has received well over three times their monthly average with 129mm, the highest June total in 42 years. Melbourne itself has had 95mm, nearly double the monthly average.

For most suburbs, well over half of the rain fell on the first day on the month and it’s been a relative dry final two weeks of June. Since June 15th, Essendon has had just 7mm.

The wet start to winter wasn’t just confined to Melbourne. In the Mallee district, Swan Hill had their wettest June in 15 years with close to triple their monthly average already falling. Over the other side of the state in East Gippsland, Orbost have received a whopping 343mm so far, the highest June total since records began in 2001.

The final days of June should remain dry for much of the state with just isolated showers bringing a few final millimetres to parts of the south.
