Tuesday’s national forecast – Unsettled, North Island

An unsettled day for the North Island thanks to a low pressure system, conditions are more settled further south.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Showers, becoming heavy and perhaps thundery early afternoon as southwesterlies strengthen. Winds may rise to gale force Auckland northwards. Showers and wind eases later on.
Highs: 14 – 17

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Rain, becoming heavy in the afternoon, easing for Taranaki in the evening. South to southwesterly winds, strong to gale about the coast.
Highs: 12 – 14

Eastern North Island

Showers, turning to rain around midday, becoming heavy at times south of Napier. Southwesterlies strengthen rising to gale about the coast in the morning. Napier being tucked away and Gisborne too far north means winds won’t get as strong there.
Highs: 12 – 18

Wellington

Rain, picking up from afternoon. Strong to gale southerlies.
High: 10

Marlborough & Nelson

Mostly cloudy, showers or some rain for Marlborough. Winds from the south (strong to gale for some coastal parts of Marlborough and through Cook Strait), winds may tend northerly in the afternoon for Nelson.
Highs: 13 – 14

Canterbury

Sunny for South Canterbury although it will cloud up from evening. Moving into North Canterbury skies start to become mostly cloudy with a few showers up towards Kaikoura. South to southwesterly winds, strong for coastal Kaikoura.
Highs: 10 – 12

West Coast

Mostly sunny, evening cloud for North Westland. South to southwesterly winds.
Highs: 15 – 17

Southland & Otago
Mostly sunny, a few clouds increasing from afternoon for Southland then elsewhere in the evening. Overnight may see a light shower for coastal Otago. Light winds tend southeast around midday.
Highs: 12 – 15
