Tuesday’s national forecast – Low starts to unravel

The low pressure system that brought strong winds and heavy rain to the North Island yesterday hasn’t moved much today but it is losing some intensity, there is still a few heavy downpours to be had though especially in the northeast. More settled for the South Island but a few isolated shower late afternoon / early evening for inland areas of the upper South Island.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Rain, heavy falls in the morning (especially in the east) then easing. Showers from late morning may become heavy with thunder especially Waikato and perhaps Auckland, clearing in the evening as southeasterlies tend southerly. Showers clear Bay Of Plenty overnight.
Highs: 19 – 22

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Partly cloudy with a few isolated showers, some may be heavy with thunder about inland hills and ranges in the afternoon, clearing evening. Easterlies ease, winds may tend onshore in the afternoon.
Highs: 18 – 22

Eastern North Island

Mostly cloudy then a few sunny spells break through in the afternoon. Occasional showers, rain north of Gisborne where it may be heavy. In the afternoon a few heavy isolated showers develop about inland hills and ranges then clearing in the evening. Northeasterly winds.
Highs: 19 – 21

Wellington

Early showers clear, afternoon sunny spells. Chance of an isolated shower late afternoon / early evening mainly about inland hills and ranges. Southeasterlies tend northeast later in the day.
Highs: 21 – 24

Marlborough & Nelson

Morning rain or showers clear then sunny spells increase, isolated showers possible about inland hills and ranges late afternoon / early evening. Southeasterlies tend northerly in the afternoon for Nelson, northwest later in the day for Marlborough.
Highs: 20 – 23

Canterbury

Chance of a morning shower or drizzle patch about the coast, cloud breaks to a few sunny spells, inland areas are sunnier. Chance of an isolated shower late afternoon about inland hills and ranges especially North Canterbury where some may become heavy with thunderstorms. Northeasterly winds, breezy about the coast.
Highs: 18 – 23

West Coast

Mostly sunny with some high cloud, winds tend southwest. Later in the evening rain develops for Fiordland with northeasterlies freshening.
Highs: 18 – 24

Southland & Otago
Morning low cloud or fog for Soutland and coastal Otago then sunny spells and high cloud, northeasterlies freshen for coastal Otago in the afternoon. Central Otago is mostly sunny and warm with high cloud. Light winds.
Highs: 18 – 25
