Tuesday’s national forecast – Front weakens

A cold front moving off the South Island then onto the North Island today weakens as it moves northwards, northerly quarter winds ahead of the front change south to southwest in behind.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
A mix of sun and cloud, northern parts of Northland may have a few light showers, clearing around midday. Skies about Waikato and Bay Of Plenty may be mostly cloudy especially from afternoon. Light winds.
Highs: 17-20

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Mostly cloudy, a few showers about Taranaki and Kapiti spread elsewhere around midday, clearing in the evening as northwesterlies start to swing around to the southeast.
Highs: 14-17

Eastern North Island

Sunny areas and thickening cloud, a few spits or light showers from afternoon about Wairarapa then further north in the evening as northerlies change to the south.
Highs: 18-21

Wellington

Cloudy with a few spits of rain, drying up in the afternoon with some sun breaking through as strong northerlies change lighter southerly.
Highs: 15-16

Marlborough & Nelson

Early rain for Nelson, spits for Marlborough then clearing to sun and some high cloud. Northerlies change southeast mid afternoon, cloud thickens in the evening.
Highs: 17-19

Canterbury

A mostly sunny morning, light winds change to the south around midday then cloud starts to thicken up from afternoon. Late afternoon or evening expect some drizzle.

West Coast

Morning showers clear (early heavy rain about Buller) then sunny areas increase from afternoon, southwesterly winds.
Highs: 15-17

Southland & Otago
A few showers till midday then skies drying out, afternoon sunny spells may break through otherwise remaining mostly cloudy. Southwesterly winds ease from afternoon.
Highs: 11-17
