Sweltering heat across much of New Zealand

It’s hot and humid in a number of main centres today as a muggy northerly spreads across much of the country.

Gisborne is the hot spot this hour on 29 degrees however high humidity is making it over to the east coast making it feel even hotter.  Napier isn’t known for being especially humid however it’s 25 degrees there this hour with 60% humidity, creating a 30 degree ‘feels like’ temperature with the humidex.

The humidex is reporting hot, sticky, weather right over the North Island.  Whangarei feels like 30 degrees this hour, Auckland has 29, Hamilton 31 even New Plymouth is up to 29.

Further south and the northerly is boosting temperatures across the lower North Island.  Humidex readings taken by  Palmerston North is around 33 degrees this hour with Wellington also around 30 degrees.  The air temperature in Wellington city is 25 degrees right now, a huge increase in conditions just a few days ago when the city had a high of only 13.

Lower Hutt feels like the lower 30s with an air temperature of 26.

The heat has also finally returned to Christchurch where the air temperature is currently 23 degrees along with Invercargill.
