Sunday’s national forecast

A low pressure system to the northwest draws in an easterly airflow over the North Island today meanwhile a ridge of high pressure is over the South Island.

North Island

A few slow moving troughs linger over Northland today bringing showers, showers may be heavy especially in the northeast then easing this evening. Auckland, Coromandel and Bay Of Plenty sees morning showers or drizzle clear then some sun breaks through. Morning cloud breaks to some sun about Waikato. Mostly cloudy along the east coast with drizzle or showers, some rain Gisborne northwards in the evening. Morning cloud breaks to sunny areas for the lower western North Island (Taranaki to Wellington). Winds for all the North Island from the east or southeast.

South Island

Morning rain for Nelson eases to showers in the afternoon then clearing away, some sun possible before dusk. Morning showers / drizzle clears Marlborough through to Canterbury, some sun breaks through in the afternoon. Mostly sunny about Otago and Southland (a frosty start especially inland), some morning coastal cloud about Otago clears. Fog or low cloud about inland areas clears in the morning but hanging around all day for some.

Mostly sunny for the West Coast. Some cloud starts to move in from the north reaching Hokitika by evening, showers push down from the north reaching Greymouth in the afternoon. Winds from the northeast for most of the South Island.
