NZ 8-Day Outlook: Severe weather to ease, high pressure soon to build

Many people are asking us when “summer weather” will return – and we have more traditional summer-like weather on the way, but we have to get through the large, deep, low pressure zone first. That low is creating more gales and heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms over the last two days of 2025 – then starts to ease and clear away over the first couple of days of January.

As we go into this weekend high pressure builds and while some may have a cooler southerly flow for a time, the skies will dry out further going into Sunday with hotter, drier, weather thanks to high pressure likely kicking off next week.

There is a subtropical low to keep an eye on, dropping south from Fiji next week, but it looks large but lazy and fairly weak – and apart from some easterlies in northern NZ it’s, for now, not expected to bring rain. But we’ll monitor it and will have more details tomorrow with a special 14 day outlook.

We have your detailed New Year’s Eve forecast and the outlook for New Year’s Day too.

Our next video update will be out on Wednesday December 31st, possibly a bit later than normal.
