A big high pressure system centered south of New Zealand directs a southerly airflow into the South Island today meanwhile an area of low pressure west of the North Island draws in a southeasterly airflow.

Showers develop this afternoon for the upper North Island, there may be a few isolated heavy falls / thunderstorms Northland and Auckland, easing this evening for most but a few isolated heavy falls may remain for some.

Canterbury has a cloudy day with showers (snow flurries to 600m), easing and thinning out this afternoon, any remaining showers clear by evening. Overnight frosts for inland areas Canterbury southwards, some fog may form overnight in some spots inland and in the east.
