A northwesterly airflow lies over New Zealand today, moving around a large high centred to the north and northeast.
Morning cloud for the upper North Island then sunny areas increase this afternoon, afternoon west to southwesterly winds in the west, afternoon north to northwesterly winds about Bay Of Plenty. The east coast has a sunny day, light winds then afternoon east to northeast winds about coastal Hawkes Bay / Gisborne. Morning cloud for the lower western North Island breaks to sunny areas, cloud may be more persistent during the day for Kapiti, west to northwest winds picking up in the afternoon.
Mostly cloudy for the West Coast, showers ease during the day and becoming mostly dry by evening, later in the evening or overnight some rain may move back into South Westland. Mostly sunny for Nelson down through to Canterbury in the east, expect some high cloud however, light winds then afternoon sea breezes. South of Banks Peninsula expect southerly breezes and some cloud may move in during the evening. Southland and Otago have high cloud, lower level cloud starts to increase towards midday as light winds tend to the south, there could be an evening shower or drizzle patch.
Highs in the mid to late twenties for the North Island, perhaps breaking into the early thirties for parts of the east coast and Waikato. The South Island has mid to late twenty degree highs in the east and for Buller, breaking into the thirties for Canterbury and Marlborough. The West Coast south of Buller has highs in the late teens or early twenties.
