Friday’s national forecast

Fronts close in on both ends of the country today, as the North Island’s front moves onto Northland this afternoon it delivers heavy rain especially in the east. Heavy rain affects further south a little later in the evening especially about the Coromandel then the Bay Of Plenty overnight. The West Coast of the South Island also sees some welcome rain move which could bring a heavy fall or two from this afternoon.

Northland
Cloudy with occasional showers developing this morning, some afternoon rain becoming heavy especially in the east then easing back to showers during the
evening as northeasterlies tend more northerly. Showers clear by midnight.

Auckland

Mostly cloudy with the odd shower, mainly from midday then some evening
rain which could become heavy, especially about the Coromandel. Breezy
northeasterly winds.
High: 18

Bay Of Plenty

Cloudy with occasional showers, late evening rain becoming heavy for some
and continuing overnight. Northeasterly winds

Central North Island & Waikato

Cloudy with a few showers, mainly from midday then late evening / overnight
rain. Northeasterly winds.
Highs: 15-17

Eastern North Island

Sunny areas and increasing high cloud, northeasterly winds freshen.
Overnight some scattered rain moves in spreading from the west.
Highs: 18-19

Taranaki

Mostly cloudy with breezy northeasterlies, the odd shower from midday then
late evening rain which could become heavy overnight.
High: 16-17

Western North Island

Sunny spells and increasing cloud, light northerlies. Odd shower from mid
afternoon.
High: 20

Wellington

Sunny spells with brisk northerlies, cloud increases late afternoon then a
few overnight showers move in.
High: 15

Nelson

Cloudy periods with a spit or two, long dry spells. Northerly winds.
High: 15

Marlborough

Sunny areas and increasing high cloud with breezy northerly winds, the odd
spell of rain may spread from the west at times. The Sounds see a few showers
during the morning.
High: 17

Canterbury

Sunny with some increasing high cloud, northerlies freshen gusty at times
inland during the afternoon. An overnight southwest change brings some
rain.
Highs: 20-21

West Coast

Cloudy with periods of rain, more persistent from afternoon. Increasing
northeasterlies then easing in the evening.
Highs: 14

Coastal Otago

Mostly sunny with some increasing high cloud, northerlies. Late afternoon /
evening a southwest change develops with showers.
High: 17

Central Otago

High cloud with north to northwesterly winds, a few spots of rain west of
the Southern Lakes area. Late afternoon or evening winds change southerly
bringing more widespread rain which eases overnight.
Highs: 13-15

Southland

Morning high cloud, a southwest change around midday brings some rain which
eases in the evening then clears by midnight.
