A very large scrub fire on Great Barrier Island has continued to burn throughout another night and forty properties have been evacuated mostly as a precautionary measure due to smoke and the wind direction.
Helicopters have flown in this morning and are sizing up the situation on where the blaze tracked overnight.
Principal Rural Fire Officer Bryan Cartelle says the fire it is continuing to burn this morning and mainland firefighters have now teamed up with local firefighters. Police assisted with evacuations last night and also roading issues.
The cause of the flare up is currently under investigation.
